    Saint Francis Healthcare Transforms Wellness Program with ManageWell

    Saint Francis Healthcare is a regional healthcare provider based in Southeast Missouri that offers a full spectrum of medical services. Saint Francis is the largest healthcare system between St. Louis and Memphis, with over 3,000 employees across a five-state region. 

    Its mission as a leading Catholic healthcare provider is to "provide a ministry of healing, wellness, quality, and love inspired by our faith in Jesus Christ." Guided by Catholic values, Saint Francis is committed to supporting their workforce's physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. Recognizing the importance of caring for their employees as they care for their patients, Saint Francis sought a comprehensive wellness program to empower their team to thrive personally and professionally. 

    Saint Francis wanted to reimagine its wellness program and needed the right partner to help them achieve consistent engagement and measurable outcomes. 

    The Process

    Historically committed to promoting health among its workforce, Saint Francis recognized the need to modernize its wellness initiatives, particularly in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Their existing year-to-year wellness program had achieved high participation but struggled to deliver meaningful, long-term health outcomes.

    Saint Francis completely overhauled their existing program and leaned on Wellvation’s ManageWell platform to adapt to its unique needs and accommodate the new month-to-month format. The evolved program structure included three levels of participation:

    • Level 1: Access high-quality health information and Mayo Clinic resources through the ManageWell platform. Participants who sign up receive a $5 monthly discount on health insurance. 
    • Level 2: Visit a healthcare provider annually or biennially. Participants receive a $5 monthly discount for completing a physical exam.
    • Level 3: Complete a monthly health-focused checklist broken into two categories: chronic care and preventative health. Participants can earn up to a 20% health insurance discount.

    The Value

    Wellvation was a clear choice for Saint Francis due to the platform's flexibility and customization capabilities. A one-size-fits-all product wouldn’t suffice, as the organization needed a solution that could adapt over time.     Saint Francis successfully delivered personalized health coaching through a platform that didn’t require a point system for motivation, which was a desired change. In addition, Saint Francis is able to take the health data from ManageWell and input it into the organization’s electronic medical record system for efficient tracking and validation of progress. These capabilities also allowed Saint Francis to fully maximize its recent investment in health bots for tracking blood pressure and body weight. The collected data is input into the system, allowing physicians to access real-time health metrics. 

    The Result

    Saint Francis has been using the ManageWell platform for over four years, and since its implementation, the organization has seen significant improvements. Some of the notable health outcomes of participants include:

    • Daily average steps increased from 5,000 to 6,000.

    • 1,312 pounds collectively lost by participants over three years.

    • Body mass index (BMI) improved, with the percentage of participants below 27 (healthy range) increasing from 36% to 42%.

    • Blood pressure control improved, with the percentage of participants meeting their target increasing from 60% to 70%.

    • LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels were maintained under 160, with the percentage of participants achieving this goal improving from 82% to 88%.

    The revamped program has spurred engagement and empowered employees to adopt healthier lifestyles, leading to cost savings and consistent health cost avoidance year after year.
